Thoughts on the Process of Painting

Thoughts on the Process of Painting

I am working on a painting right now that is a real challenge. I have always gone for the detail in an image. I guess when you paint from photos more than life this can be a challenge to fight since the reference doesn't change and the surroundings aren't exhilarating. Nonetheless I am trying to fight this. I am working on a scene from Galilee RI of fishing vessels. Something I am very familiar with since my father and uncles are fisherman. I too worked on the water at one time. It's home for me. I used to paint more details going for that photographic look. I admire work like that but do not want to paint that way anymore. I will post an old fishing boat painting so you can see what I mean. Well, back to my boats. I'll let you know how it comes out.

This is the Katherine
I did this painting nearly 20 years ago.
You can see the kind of detail I worked at acheiving.

I haven't finished the boat painting yet. I put it aside to do some smaller work. It's amazing how hard it is to paint in a loose yet believable way. It looks so easy!! There's so much a layman doesn't understand about the painting process. Regardless of medium or style of painting there's a lot of thought about what the purpose of the painting will be,
then tremendous skill in how to execute it.
Even as an artist I have looked at work in the past and said "Oh I could do that" or "They want that much for that?"  As time has gone on and I learn more and more through training with others or observing others work and then most importantly trying and practicing myself I have grown my own appreciation for the skill involved in producing a good piece of art.
I have also learned it is up to me as an artist to teach and relay this to my observers. I as the artist have the responsibility to show the obeserver and layman the view from an arists eye.

This is my set up. Here's the other boat painting I was talking about. It's in progress.
I took a break to work on some smaller ones. If I leave a painting and come back with a fresh eye I better can see the problem and fix it.

This is a new 6x6 I tried to keep it simple and loose.

I'm trying my hand at a new little one of a my nephew when he was little. I hope to acheive a level of loose freshness around the parameters and then a more detailed look on the boy. Wish me Luck !!

Thanks Tracy and Ken for joining my blog. I hope you feel free to comment and offer your thoughts or questions. This is FUN! :)

I had done this painting a while ago and I actually got some negative feedback on it one time. This guy who I don't believe knows art in general had the nerve to say it stunk!! Well I don't listen to everyone, but I knew there was something not quite right yet I really liked this painting! I'm drawn as an artist to making a grey day work. I love the cool violety colors you see on a day like this. I also enjoy the palette knife as a change and the freedom I feel using it. Sometimes I feel my composition can be weak and so I sought the advise of a trusted art friend. Drama in composition and use of color is crucial to a successful and inviting painting.
Well I originally had the light house closer and more centered. I also wanted to frame it so I cut the painting down to fit a standard size frame which in turn cut off rocks I had at the bottom. (I wish I had a picture of the before now) The rocks shape, color, size and position were distracting to the focal point...the light house.
I am much happier now with the results. I don't care what anyone says! :)

The last few weeks have been a little out of sorts. I'm at my sisters in NY where there is a lot of call for tattoo work. I am very versitale in terms of what I can do with art which has provided me with an income to support my true passion of painting on canvas. It has interrupted the nice flow I was on
but thankfully I always get it back.
I am working on both getting a body of work together and working out my desired style and subject matter.
I plan to get out and do some painting from life. In the mean time I haven't finished anything new. I've been working on some commissioned pieces. One of a ballerina is a gift for a docter who loves ballerinas. Another a portrait I'm excited about and another request for a Winslow Homer reproduction. That one will be a snap since it's a seascape fishing scene, something I'm very familiar with.

I finally got some new work started. I sometimes have visions in that half awake half a sleep state. I can't wait to show you what I've done but I need to finish them before I do.
The tattoo work has been going strong. It's a complete brain shift doing this kind of work. I love art though and creating art no matter what the medium is.
I'm hoping to get the art classes started again. I also hope to participate in the Narragansett and Wickford art shows this year.
In the mean time, check out http://julieart.imagekind.com/ where I have my work available in print form. I will also be posting work on ebay. I just haven't decided what to put there yet. Any suggestions?

Not that this is related to any fine art I'm doing, but I mentioned doing doing tattoos so here is a recent one I've done. This is my 12th I think. I called this one done. I started 4 or 5 others.

This is a painting I started a month or so ago. This painting is in progress. I thought I would show you it unfinished so you could see the way I blocked it in although I wish I took some earlier shots. This is a challenge because there is so much "green". The challenge is showing a difference in the greens. This in turn makes for a more interesting painting.

It's been a while since I've written. I have had other pressing life issues to attend to but life is coming back around. I had been focusing on tattooing these last few months. It's so exciting and so much fun.  I will soon post images of what  I am doing. In the mean time my fine art is still my priority. I have gotten out to paint on sight which was exhilirating and I have been mentally and somewhat physically working out my Series on a "Scorned Woman" for 2011. I hope to be moving to Providence soon. It's all so exciting!!
I will try to get better at posting on my blog. I have many more ideas I've yet to implement so be on the look out! Why did I think I think I needed a man in my life??? Jeeez!!!

I came across a video on Facebook I thought was very well said and wanted to share. I've always quoted the saying "There's nothing new under the sun" I  have learned a long time ago in order to learn and grow as an individual artist we need to "copy" or study other artists work. That is why provisions are made at museums where a student artist can set up and copy the work of the masters.
As much as I have tried to "copy" though ,for example,  my teacher and mentors work, Ernest Principato, I can't. I can only take general technique and ideas and just like a signature it comes from me in my own way. If you have an interest in learning more about the process of art please click on this link and view this video I think you will enjoy it!

Again I haven't had time to get to this blog but I am getting closer to many things relating to my art. I am like a sponge these days. I am in total learning mode. Not only am I taken courses relating to design but my connections to Facebook and examining others art and why they create is teaching me so much. I  feel like I am starting my life right now.  It's very exciting!! I hope you find my journey interesting enough to follow. I may be a little slow with my posts but for you that may be a good thing in light of your busy lives. I am in this awesome space in Providence RI right now that can only be conducive to creativity.
so please follow along.
PS. My work is hanging at Amy's Place on Wickenden St in Providence, probably until the end of November, so please go have a coffee or omelet and check it out.
